Outdoor Physical Therapy for Outdoor Athletes in Denver

A couple weeks ago Jess and I were at REI picking up a few supplies and gear for some upcoming adventures this Summer and I was reflecting on their brand. I took a step back and thought, how would people describe REI if you asked them? Most people would say, its an outdoor clothing and gear store and it got me thinking. These are people at Tundra Performance and Physical Therapy that we work with and treat everyday, outdoor athletes. Why couldn’t we be described as an Outdoor Physical Therapy company?

These are our people. This what we do. One of our major specialties is treating people who ski, snowboard, rock climb, mountain bike, trail run, hike, and backpack. Why can’t we be described this way when people talk about Tundra Performance and Physical Therapy?

I have spent a long time thinking about this and here’s where we’re at.

First hurdle, would people assume we literally do physical therapy in the outdoors? Probably yes. While I love the outdoors, I’m too soft to actually WORK outside. Sounds too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and generally speaking I like a good working air conditioner.

Second barrier, does anyone actually search for outdoor physical therapy? When I searched this phrase, everything came up benefits of going outside of to do exercise. While all this is good information, why aren’t we grouping outdoor activities all in one for physical therapy as well? I frame outdoor activities comprehensively.

Name me one person who likes outdoor activities and they only do one activity. You might know someone who participates in one sport more than another, but nobody just does the one. And if you are friends with this person who only does ONE activity, I question their sanity. We listen and we judge all day…..

I’m putting my foot down and starting a new trend, coining a new term.

Outdoor Physical Therapy for Outdoor Athletes.

Here at Tundra Performance and Physical Therapy, we want to work with people who want to be outside. People who want to be in the mountains. People who want to get out and explore.

What does it mean to be an outdoor and performance physical therapy company and treat outdoor athletes?

On top of a standardized and comprehensive assessment, we utilize specific testing to your goals and what you want to get back to along with programming that integrates strength training and rehabilitation with your sport.

This means finger and grip assessments on the hang board or training blocks if your a rock climber. Running and gait assessment if your trail runner. Video analysis of your landing and force absorption if you are a skier or snowboarder.

We create individualized programs that take into account how many days you climb or mountain bike and blend that with your strength training. We discuss what trails or routes to start with when you’re first returning to the mountain. What grips to potentially modify or avoid if you’re returning from a pulley injury rock climbing. We want you back on the mountain doing what you love.
