The Spookiest Phrases I’ve Heard in the Clinic
We hope everyone has their costumes set, candy purchased, and ready for Halloween tomorrow night. For those of you who know my partner Jess, if there isn’t a horror movie on the TV in our house every night, we’ve failed at properly celebrating.
In celebration of Halloween here’s some of the spookiest, the scariest, and frightening phrases I've heard in the clinic:
1) Squatting with Your Knees Over Your Toes is Bad for Your Knees
I’ve been hearing this for years and it sends shivers down my spine. Squatting and lunging with your knees over your toes can be one of the best ways to strengthen your knees when it comes to rehab. Squat low, squat deep, squat often.
2) Bone on Bone
Nothing like talking skeletons this time of year. When someone tells me they’re bone on bone, it's typically in the context of needing surgery. While this certainly might be the case, being “bone on bone” is only a part of the story and doesn’t mean surgery is always the answer.
3) Deadlifts Are Bad for Your Back
I get more nightmares from this phrase than any horror film. Deadlifts can be one of the best strengthening exercises for your spine in both context to back physical therapy and overall just being strong and healthy.
4) If I Lift Heavy, I’ll Get Bulky
Lifting “heavy” is quintessential to a proper recovery and can also be one of the biggest reasons why someone isn’t seeing results if not included in their rehabilitation program. It's one of the most important factors in how we prescribe exercises in physical therapy. If you ever lift to the point that your muscles are too big, congratulations, you’ve succeeded at what I’ve been trying to accomplish since college. It’s hard to do.
5) My Doctor Told Me I Can’t Do “X” Anymore
This phrase is the scariest of them all. We help people everyday overcome adversity and get people back to doing what they love regularly. Before we slap such a heavy burden on someone, we make sure to explore every option available to them. A lot of the time, the right physical therapy program does the trick.
