More Than Kegels: Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy Explained

Pelvic floor physical therapy is more than kegels and isn’t just for postpartum moms or people dealing with incontinence (though it’s great for that too). It’s for athletes, lifters, runners, and anyone who wants to move, lift, and perform at their best—without pain, pressure, or dysfunction holding them back.

What even is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

Most of the time, the pelvic floor does its job: keeping our organs in place, allowing us to pee only when we’re ready, and keeping us upright.

Sometimes, it doesn’t. Sometimes organs don’t stay as supported as they could and cause heaviness. Sometimes mothers start to leak when jumping. Sometimes low backs get irritated as pregnant moms get to a certain point in their pregnancy. That’s what pelvic floor physical therapy is for!

What pelvic floor physical therapy specializes in treating?

  • Pain during Pregnancy, Birth Prep, Postpartum recovery, and Diastasis Recti

  • Urinary Symptoms including Incontinence, Urgency, Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome, Overactive Bladder

  • Pelvic Pain including Chronic Pelvic Pain, Vulvar Pain

  • Prolapse and Hernias

  • Pain with Intimacy

  • Return to Running and Lifting

  • Lower back pain, SI joint pain, Pubic Symphysis Pain, Hip pain

What to expect at an appointment for Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy:

A conversation about what your pain points are and what you would like to improve. We assess the strength, motion, and stability of your body. This may include an internal pelvic floor exam as it’s one of the best ways to assess pelvic floor muscle tightness and strength; however, this is never required and completely up to each person.

Once we have a good idea of what is going on, you will be provided with a straightforward and in-depth plan to achieve your goals. You may be provided with some techniques for pain relief. On day one, we also design a home program to strengthen gains made in the clinic.

How do we approach Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy differently?

We want your rehab to be functional as fast as possible. If you are having pelvic floor dysfunction with lifting, we get to lifting in the clinic. If you are leaking while running, we progress to running in the clinic. Pelvic floor physical therapy may start on the treatment table, but we want you getting as close to your activity as soon as you are ready!
