Milestones & New Expectations

I had a recent conversation with a patient this past week who we’ve been training and working with over the past year+ and he casually mentioned something that initially caught me off guard but once I processed the information, I was ecstatic for him.

I initially started working with Allan for his neck and shoulder pain from pull ups and eventually transitioned into treating his hip during hiking season. During our visits, he brought up his back history, which was giving out roughly every 6 months since as long as he could remember. As we worked through his physical therapy in the other areas, conversations heated up when the ultimate question was finally proposed, “Would you like it not to be that way?”

I was treating Allan’s neck and shoulder followed by his hip, why didn’t he lead with treatment for his back? From his perspective, he had already tried traditional physical therapy……….. many times.

I get it, I hear this all the time. I am proud to say this is why we’re different.

We assessed his back, dialed in some of the core deficits that lead to his recurring history of symptoms and put the plan in place. The biggest item that had been missing from his previous plans, direct back strengthening and proper intensity.

Allan is a mover. He’s got a lot of good things going for him, but everything that was previously prescribed was underloaded and not direct enough at building his back strength. By adding in back extensions, deadlifts and hinge work, along with some properly hard lifts, good things started to happen.

This past week Allan reported to me, he’s gone a year without his back giving out on him! It doesn’t get any better and I can't be more excited for him. Here’s to pain milestones and new expectations!
