Why Traditional PT Didn’t Work for Me
Back in 2008, coming back from class after being enrolled in my engineering program at the University of Wisconsin - LaCrosse. I got done that day and couldn’t get past the thought of “I need to move.” I knew I wanted to transition to something in the movement and fitness space, but also into something that was going to challenge me.
After researching and exploring various options and arenas, I landed in the world of physical therapy. The thought of taking an active person in pain or difficulty, problem solving, and leveraging exercise and movement to achieve specific adaptations sounded unreal to me.
Fast forward to 2015 and just completed PT school. I started my career in a community gym with high hopes and aspirations for what I wanted to do with my patients. I learned quite quickly that ambitions are one thing and the reality of the healthcare system is another.
I spent the next few years searching for a company and a system that matched my values and mission but was left empty handed. Each location, each company had aspects that I related to and wanted to embody but with each situation I wasn’t able to fulfill everything I was hoping for with my clients.
From seeing multiple patients at a time, to companies dictating and impeding on my autonomy for how to treat. Utilization of support staff, limiting my time and resources that I could spend with somebody. Amongst other aspects, they all ended in the same place, I felt privileged in the opportunities I was given, to provide premier treatment and care to my patients, but knew there was more I could be doing. More I could achieve with them and the more that they were capable of.
This is where Tundra Performance and Physical Therapy was established.
A place where a patient's goals are put first. Each session is one-on-one, you and me. That means the time we spend together is spent entirely on understanding you: your history, your movement patterns, what you're trying to get back to, and what's been standing in the way. There's no hand-off to a tech halfway through. No repeating your story to someone new every visit.
The decisions made about your care are based entirely on what you need. Freedom that allows for a level of individualization that simply isn't possible inside a traditional clinic structure. It's all about how do we get you where you want to go?
Because we work primarily with active individuals, outdoor athletes, weekend warriors, weightlifters, people whose identity is tied to how they move, our approach reflects that. The goal is never just to get you out of pain. It's to understand why the problem happened in the first place, address it at its root, and build you back in a way that makes you more resilient than before.
This is the standard myself and our team of physical therapists held for ourselves long before Tundra existed. We just needed an environment where it could actually happen.
Key Takeaways:
Patient focused care. Every session is you and the PT, with no hand-offs to techs. The entire visit is focused on understanding your history, your movement, and your goals. The decisions made about your care are based entirely on what you need.
Beyond pain relief. Tundra targets root causes and builds resilience, not just symptom resolution — especially relevant for active people whose identity is tied to movement.
Helping athletes RESOLVE THEIR PAIN by CLEARLY DEFINING THE PROBLEM and IMPLEMENTING EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS to get them back doing the activities they love!
